Three weeks had passed since Aunt Denise died, and during that time, life had been on autopilot. Everything had been one big blur.
Standing in front of the mirror in the Jack-and-Jill bathroom, I slipped on my suit jacket. I couldnât believe I was wearing a suit again. Twice within three weeks was epic for me. Iâd worn the same black suit to Aunt Deniseâs funeral six days ago, and that night I was taking my girl to homecoming.
I couldnât wait to see her all dressed up. I couldnât wait to hold her in my arms. We hadnât spent a lot of time together since that night in her barn when Iâd wanted her so darn badly, it had been hard to keep my hands where they belonged. Sheâd been right. That night had not been the right time to have sex. Iâd been too emotional, and I wanted to make darn sure my head was clear and our first time was special.
Despite that, the last few weeks had been jam-packed with school, basketball practice, and Aunt Deniseâs funeral. Quinn had her own busy schedule, especially with putting in more work on the farm since her dad was down a person. He hadnât hired anyone yet to fill the hole Carter had left when heâd gone off to college.
The door from Ethan and Marcusâs room slid open, and Marcus strutted in.
His blue gaze searched mine. âWhy are you breathing heavy?â
He and I had been distant since that night when heâd rammed his fists into me in the kitchen. Weâd hardly spoken even though I had apologized to him. I knew all of us were processing Aunt Deniseâs death. I knew he needed time as well.
âNo reason,â I said. He didnât need to know I was thinking of Quinn.
Heâd threatened to tell Quinn to stay away from me, but he hadnât that I knew of. If he had, Quinn wouldâve said something to me.
Kade had counseled me to give Marcus some space, and I had. But the less we talked, the more I felt like the tension between us was growing deeper and deeper.
Marcus was seeing Sloane steadily. Maybe Sloane was good for him because Marcus hadnât been in any fights.
âAre you excited about the dance?â I asked, praying he would open up to me.
His lips thinned. âDonât get in my business tonight.â
I raised my hands midway. âThen donât give me a reason to.â My tone was calm with no inflection of emotion.
His nostrils flared as he adjusted his red tie.
The theme of the homecoming dance was fire and ice, so the attire requirement was red, black, and white. We were both wearing red ties, white shirts, and black suits. I had no idea what Quinn was wearing except for the color scheme.
Ethan waltzed in, dressed the same sans the tie. âEverything okay in here?â
I glanced through the mirror at Marcus. His blue eyes were riveted to himself as he combed his hair back off his head.
I shrugged at Ethan, afraid to say anything that would set Marcus off.
